When someone points an index finger toward the moon, one will know where the moon is. But by looking at the finger alone, one will not find out what the moon is or what it looks like. Physically, the finger is not the moon and can never substitute for it. In other words, although representations are the landmarks of thoughts and supposedly provide and regulate our access to the real world, they are fictional and contradictional constructions which constantly mislead and obscure our apprehension of reality. Signifiers are not the signifieds, and there appears no substantial correlation between the two. From an objective point of view, signs are simply futile and ineffective devices to tell the truth.
